Haiti: Who’s on first?
Hey, young world! Whats going on? Before I begin this post, I wanted to say “Congratulations” to the city of New Orleans. They deserve some form of happiness, especially after the last few years. Moving on, if you caught @youngmclayton, @tracyreneejones, and myself on blogtalkradio.com last Wednesday (catch us every Wednesday at 10 pm on the Soapbox Chronicles! I know, Shameless plug) you heard us referencing the situation in Haiti. I see ALOT of similarities between the situation in Haiti and the onset/aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The reason I say that is because they both involved people of color and how they were and are both being used in order to further this country’s agenda against “brown people succeeding”. I mean, New Orleans nor Haiti, were in the best of shape at the time of these disasters, however the President knew of the circumstances and of the possibility that the levees could break and put New Orleans under water…..but then again “George Bush didn’t care about black people!” *yea, I said it* and then to top it off, in the face of this recent tragedy , he tells you to send MONEY instead of sending what the people in Haiti might actually need….SmH *damn you, Haliburton* I believe that these efforts are all to see “who’s on first?” I’m saying,” Who’s on first?” because with all the humanitarian aid being rushed to Haiti, it soon will be a “scramble for Haiti”! As soon as they decide who gets the first area, Haiti is going turn into “Disneyland”! Of course, they are going to rebuilt the roads, schools, and bring business to Haiti, but at what cost?! Will we have to suffer through endless tourism commercials asking us to visit Haiti? Will we be subject to a Super Wal Mart in Port-au-Prince with weird-looking Wal-Mart greeters welcoming us to Wal-Mart in French? I can’t stand what is about to happen to Haiti…Let the “Disneyfication” of Haiti commence….Ugggh….We need to stop the BS and revive the spirit of Touissant L’Overture and assist the people of Haiti and NOT take over…they need our help not people coming in trying to “churchify” them w/ pamphlets and outdoor revivals…they need help restructuring and growing on their OWN, not being told how to grow….thats the United States problem always trying to help people out then move into their house and take over!! With that being said, Haiti needs to pull an “Andy Pettite” and pick that runner from off of first base and just take care of their OWN business!

So basically what’s this boils down to, is that Haiti has been a target for years and now that the opportunity has come for corporations to dig their hands in the cookie jar. The media has done their part in making sure that the graphic images will compel us to make donations or what not. So in order for the companies to make their $$$ back.. I mean improve on rebuilding, we’ll be subjected to what you are ready mentioned.
Time will tell.
Well stated and of course thought provoking! I had to let my thoughts marinate for a bit. Let me state that my heart, compassion, empathy & donation is with Haiti. Part of the heritage of my family rests within the soil of that country, our country. However, unfortunately the more things change, the more they stay the same. The monkey can’t get on your back if you’re standing straight because if Haiti would discipline itself on it’s own agenda and focus on national goal as opposed to individual profit then the country would have more success in realizing its own dreams. Like Chuck D said, “We gotta keep ourselves in check.” Haiti needs to adopt this philiosy because the world is watching. As an old Haitian proverb states, “If you enter a room with your honor you can leave with your respect.”
[...] you to feel relieved so when whatever government gets there and sets up shop, (see @elhafiz post who’s on first) we (the viewers) are lulled into sleep thinking that it’s okay for a new government to step in [...]
You’re right about the future “Disneyfication” that will soon take place. I can’t wait! *sarcasm*
I said the same thing the day after the earthquake. Americans were too eager to rush over there and take over. But I’m glad they did because they saved a lot of lives.
We’ll just have to wait and see. Someone mentioned that after it’s all said and done, it might just become an American Island. O_o
